The most visited mountain in North America and the second most visited mountain in the world behind Japan's Mount Fuji, Pikes Peak forms a stunning backdrop for Colorado Springs and the Garden of the Gods.

At an altitude of 14,110 feet above sea level, Pikes Peak is the 31st highest peak out of 54 Colorado peaks. It is the farthest east of the big peaks in the Rocky Mountain chain, which contributed to its early fame among explorers, pioneers and immigrants and made it the symbol of the 1859 Gold Rush to Colorado with the slogan, "Pikes Peak or Bust".

Over a half million people reach the summit house every year by the Pikes Peak Highway, Barr Trail or the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway, paved part of the way, is open year round, weather permitting. Barr Trail is the longest of any trails leading to the top of the 54 mountains in Colorado that are over 14,000 feet, and offers the greatest base-to-summit elevation gain in the state: 7,400 feet.

About 15,000 people a year attempt to climb Pikes Peak on foot. The 13-mile trail begins at the base of Pikes Peak in Manitou Springs. The 8.9 mile cog railroad typically operates April through December.

Week-long Colorado Springs Ski Trip
By Johnst4

Huge, cold mountains to climb and ski down. Cute boys to cuddle with against the cold and hard snow. A nice warm...rented cabin...big enough for three bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a jacuzzi outside. The cabin comes with a fireplace. Outside, you can go to any of the ten, two-story malls, and be able to shop inside that warm mall for hours. Or you could just take a break from it all and enjoy hot chocolate of coffee, while reading a book by the fire.

We were going to drive up Pikes Peak, but it was snowing and we weren't able to :(
I'm going to hike it someday.

Beautiful and fun to see, even if only to get snowed on in the middle of summer. Colorado Springs has a surprising number of things to do and is well worth a trip.

The drive to the top was pretty scary. First it is a gravel road and second it winds back and forth with no guard rails. Once up top it was a wonderful view. There is about a 30 or more degree difference up top so be prepared. If I were to go again I would probably take the train up instead of drive.

You can see the curvature of the earth from up here.

Great view, but the altitude makes you want to toss your cookies...

Drove up Pike's Peak highway and hiked Barr Trail to the summit and back. Beautiful scenery and a difficult hike for the novice backpacker.
