Makena State Park comprises 165 acres (0.7 km2) coastal of south of Wailea on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The largest beach, also known as "Big Beach" is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and more than 100 feet (30 m) wide. "Little Beach" nearby, is one of the few beaches on the Hawaiian Islands where nude sunbathing is tolerated by local police, another being Red Sand Beach located near Hāna.
Big Beach, also known as "Oneloa Beach" and "Makena Beach", is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, as it is both a wonderful sunbathing and bodyboarding spot. The shore is fairly protected from wind and in the afternoon is a great place to sun worshipers. Fortunately, the "Makena cloud" settles in often, giving the sand much desired cooling periods.
Little Beach, also known as "Puu Olai Beach" is a small beach just North of Big Beach separated by a steep lava outcropping (the tip of Puu Olai) and a 5 minute hike. On Sundays Little Beach is host to celebratory drumming and fire dancing. The beach is only 1/8th of a mile long and can seem crowded at peak times.
Black Sand Beach, also known as "Naupaka Beach", is considered one of the most unused beaches on Maui. Having its own road and a parking lot right on the edge of the beach, it allows easy access for all.
Puu Olai is a dormant volcanic cinder cone in the center of the park with a height of 360 feet (110 m).
