Family Camping at Sequoia National Park
June 21, 2008
4 days
Sequoia National Park
By Ingrid
Spend 4 days camping in a tent, RV, or cabin in this gorgeous national park, where redwoods loom & ferns grow alongside trails. One of the best examples of High Sierra terrain I've seen, but be prepared, the bears are numerous & frequent the campgrounds & trails. Worth it though because this is a Top US Destination.

Trip Notes
What's great about this trip is that you can enjoy your entire vacation here & know that you still have the Kings Canyon to explore on a next trip! I'd recommend taking a scenic drive through the Kings Canyon National Park before heading home to give you a teaser experience for your next campout!

I included a hotel in Three Rivers, on the south end of the National Park but I'd recommend camping or RVing to be surrounded by this beauty.

Day 1
From personal experience, clear out the car from any wrappers, bits of candy or snacks from your car & keep the windows closed at night. Bears have been known to pull back the car doors & windows just because someone left a few peanuts in their car.

At night, make sure each child has his/her own flashlight. I also gave each of my children a metal spoon & a pot or pan lid to put by their sleeping bag. That way, if they hear anything suspicious (like a bear snooping around), they can clang on their pot & yell, "GO AWAY BEAR!". The clanging also alerts others in your campsite. My now 25 year-old daughter recently said it created a comfort zone for her.

That said, Sequoia is truly a wondrous area to explore!
Day 3
I confess...I was heartily climbing Moro Rock when we got to a vista point & when my youngest son raced to the edge to look over, my knees started shaking. For the next 20 minutes, I trudged up those steps with wobbly knees before deciding that others could take pictures from the top while I found my way back to solid ground. Next time I go though, I'll be sure to go for it again (at least this time, my young kids are grown :>).
Day 4
You could save the Boyden Caverns for your return trip to Kings Canyon because you'll already be exploring the Crystal Cave in the morning. So this is only showing as a 1-hr activity as it's mainly to go to the overlook & get your bearings before heading over to Cedar Grove
