Sausalito, A Bay Area Gem
August 18, 2009

Sausalito
By Ingrid
I'm staying local & heading to Sausalito for my anniversary. Sausalito is a cute little bayside town with a great waterfront area. There's houseboats & flower-lined side streets, quirky stores & plenty of places to eat. It's also very near the Redwoods (Muir Woods, about 8 miles), 3-4 beaches within 20 minutes, Angel Island & Tiburon just a tad north, and of course, San Francisco about 15 minutes south.

Trip Notes
We're staying at a houseboat this trip but if we hadn't had that accommodation already lined up, I would choose the Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa ($200-$405/night). It's right on the waterfront (street side) so every room has a view of Richardson Bay. Another good option is The Inn @ Tide, which sits right over the water (rooms range from $305 to $1025/night). Both are on Bridgeway, the main street in Sausalito. The next street up the hill is Caledonia, which also has antique shops, dining spots, fun stores.

There are less expensive hotels in Sausalito, including Hotel Sausalito (a bit of French Riviera on the park in Sausalito) starting at $155 & others in the low $100s.

Day 1
My sister in law recommends 2 restaurants here: Angelino's or Le Garage is a must stop for Dinner or Lunch.

Wireless: Around the library (up street from Ace Hardware store), wireless is free; people ait in their cars and connect. Check with the Sausalito Library.

Day 2
Muir Woods give you many options to experience the Redwoods, from an easy 1/2 hour loop to a strenuous 4.5 uphill Ocean View loop.

While there, I spotted a number of bus tours that went to Muir Woods: www.SFShuttletours.com, Tower Tours, www.city-sigghtseeing.us.

We decided to go to Angelino's for our anniversary dinner. Bill had ravioli with eggplant & ricotta while I had Prawn Scampi w/spinach and red onion. There were only 5 prawns but they were huge...and delicious...as were the desserts.
Day 3
We lucked out with a docent connection who gave us a private tour so we got to experience a unique Alcatraz!

This turned out to be a full-board walking day, starting with geocaching at a cemetery (Hanging with Buddha), hiking Muir Woods, then a 3-hour walking tour of Alcatraz.
Day 4
The Lighthouse Cafe was a small dining establishment with 5 tables and 8 bar chairs. They are open from 6:30-3pm & while we were there, all the tables were being kept full. Being the only Danish place in town, I went for the Copenhagen Burger with remoulade & it came with beets, pickled cucumbers, capers, red onions, a raw egg yolk (sorry, couldn't eat that) & home fries. A very nice lunch!

Muir Beach is a nice kite-flying beach...lots of dead jellyfish on the beach though...not sure why.
